Vermilion
Cabin

WHAT

A New Cabin

WHERE

Cook, MN

Replacing an old cabin with all its limitations, this new, year around home, is designed to fully take advantage of what this beautiful site on lake Vermilion has to offer.

The welcoming sense of arrival is experienced right away through the wrap around front porch. Inviting one into this cabin through its warm, light filled open floor plan concept and orientation of spaces. This open design provides great visual access from all the main spaces to captures the expansive lake views.

Careful siting of the home and its placement created the opportunity to take advantage of the site’ slopes to create a new lower level walk-out area, originally missing in the old cabin. This also addressed and corrected the grading and drainage issues and concerns previously experienced. The compact, yet efficient use of space was balanced in contrast by vaulted high ceilings and clerestory windows. The series of large picture windows create a sense of connection between the interior spaces and the outside views, while the awning windows above them allow for natural flow of air and ventilation. The screen porch was a perfect extension of the living spaces to the outdoors. It's vaulted ceiling lined with knotty pine and the stone fireplace and hearth, creates a warm and cozy atmosphere and shelter, perfect for entertaining and protected from bugs and rain.
